About DAN

DAN stands for Divers Alert Network, or as it is familiarly known the 'diver's safety net'. DAN was born in 1980 following the initiative of certain scientists and university professors of international standing, in the USA and in Italy, who had understood that the managing of a diving emergency requires a special knowledge, not commonly found as part of normal medical structures.

DAN's mission is that of operating and maintaining an international network of alarm centers, active 24 hours a day, guaranteeing, in the event of an emergency, specialized assistance, to any diver, anywhere in the world.

DAN also provides diving medical advice, carries out research into diving safety, organizes courses and seminars with the aim of increasing the knowledge and sense of responsibility of recreational divers and provides financial and technical assistance to hyperbaric treatment centers in developing countries.

The goal of DAN is to understand all the variables that affect the diver, in order to be able to PREVENT the problems. DAN does not want LIMIT to provide emergency in the accidents. The goal is to introduce a new concept into the diver in order to prevent.

The accidents are rare and they are correlated with many causes including some not correlated with the dive, for instance sudden cardiac arrest or propeller injuries.

The safe can be significantly improved with the collaboration of the protagonist being more involved: The industry of equipment, the researcher and specialist of dive medicine, the agency instructor that transfers to the diving community the techniques and the attitudes of the diver. This is what is happening! DAN, leader organization of safe dive had founded a Permanent laboratory of research: with the finality of study the most important variable that can affect the sub's safety.

The DAN Europe Diving Safety Laboratory is a permanent research program in the field, and it is composed of an establish structure, the DSL Base, and the researcher. The data will be collect with a dedicate software (Immersioni). The researchers are divided into 3 levels: the research operator, the research technician and the research specialist. The research Operator is the first level of the researcher, he will train with an online course, and for the other two levels of researchers you need good experience in the first level and a new course in the field. At this level you are entrusted with an important project (Doppler, special project).

Using the DAN Emergency Hotline
+1-919-684-4DAN (4326)

Whenever you need help, DAN is there. DAN's medical staff is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to handle diving emergencies such as decompression sickness, arterial gas embolism, pulmonary barotrauma, or other serious diving-related injuries. Each year, DAN answers more than 2000 calls on the diving emergency hotline from its members and divers.

When you call the DAN Emergency Hotline:

The number +1-919-684-4DAN (4326) is answered at the switchboard of Duke University Medical Center. Tell the operator you have a diving emergency. The operator will either connect you directly with DAN or have someone call you back at the earliest possible moment.
DAN's medical staff may make an immediate recommendation or call you back after making arrangements with a local physician or the DAN Regional Coordinator. DAN Regional Coordinators are familiar with chamber facilities in their area, and because they're qualified in diving medicine, they can make recommendations about treatment.
DAN's medical staff or Regional Coordinator may ask you to wait by the phone while they make arrangements. These plans may take 30 minutes or longer, as several phone calls may be required. This delay should not place the diver in any greater danger. However, if the situation is life-threatening, arrange to transport the diver immediately to the nearest local medical facility for immediate stabilization and assessment of his or her condition. Call DAN TravelAssist at 1-800-326-3822 at this time for consultation with the local medical provider.

DAN is a non-profit organisation that exists to provide expert information and advice for the benefit of the diving public. The historical and primary function of DAN is to provide emergency medical advice and assistance for underwater diving injuries, to work to prevent injuries and to promote diving safety.

Second, DAN promotes and supports underwater diving research and education particularly as it relates to the improvement of diving safety, medical treatment and first aid.

Third, DAN strives to provide the most accurate, up-to-date and unbiased information on issues of common concern to the diving public, primarily, but not exclusively, for diving safety.
